As I was driving this morning, I just knew that I was going to have to blog about my little road rage 'incident' and confess all the honking I did at a MACK truck that pulled out right in front of me. I have seriously held back on the honking for a long time, and I have really worked on it, but when that little angel on my shoulder -- we'll call him 'Casey' -- is not with me, I have a hard time keeping my honking hand in check. And, like always, I regretted it as soon as it was done. But why does it matter so much? As I get older, I am more and more able to stand outside myself and see how what I've just done may appear to others. That can be unfortunate to see, but I think it is important as well, because if we can see that ugliness we should want to change it.
On another note, I have to give 'Post of the Week' to my dear friend Ruthie. She has a blog here, but this post comes from her shiny new blog called The Knowledge Box. It's all about homeschooling and all the things these six kids are learning. It looks like so much fun, I want to join them every single day!

I would not have pegged you as a honker. :) I'm one of those people that is afraid to touch my horn. So of course, one day, our horn started messing up, and started honking repeatedly WITHOUT ME TOUCHING IT, as I was driving back from the mall to my house, in the midst of SLOW traffic. I about cried the whole way home and almost had a panic attack. Luckily my sister was with me, it helped a little! Weird story huh?
btw, that's such a cute Honk picture... I was at a friend's house yesterday, they keep a few baby goslings. :) We let them swim in a little pool and fed them lettuce, it was fun!
Aww, baby ducks! Yeah, I found one that was cute...maybe added some softness to my story, huh? =)
Casey never uses the horn either. And one time -- oh, I feel bad about this -- I was with Amy our freshman year, and somebody either cut her off, or it was the time we actually got hit by some drunk guys, but I reached over from the passenger seat and honked the horn for her!! I immediately apologized, and she was actually glad I did it because she didn't think about it, but I still felt bad about it. Now that is bad honking manners, if ever there was such a thing.
Tracey, don't beat yourself up too much over the honking. Sounds like you have it pretty well under control. Sometimes, it needs to be done! I hardly ever honk, but I was back in NYC this weekend and I was taking my mom to lunch and a very inconsiderate (typical New York) driver completely cut me off. Not only did I honk -- a lot -- but I let out a word my mother has NEVER heard me say. She completely agreed with my reaction to the rude jerk, though, including the four-letter word. Once in a while we have to let it out!
Yes, I think we do have to 'let it out' every once in a while, Sally-Anne...although I will refrain from the four-letter wordage myself. That is another thing I don't want the other drivers to think -- that I am cussing them out!
I just laughed out loud at the thought of you reaching over and honking someone's horn! hahahaha
I'm sure the drivers in Mississippi are generally nicer than, say, those in Queens. My problem is that when I was living in NY during law school, I still had my TX plates, and now I have MD plates, so New Yorkers think I'm some sort of hick (not that Texans OR Marylanders are hicks, but to New Yorkers they are) and they try to take advantage of me. Little do they know!
